How to claim

Edmonton’s municipal water tests between roughly 165 and 200 mg/L of total hardness, which is firmly in the hard range. Every time that water is heated, dissolved calcium and magnesium drop out of solution and bond to the inside of your hot water tank, your dishwasher’s heating element and the fine passages of a tankless heater.

A water softener is the only treatment that removes hardness itself rather than masking its symptoms. Water passes through a resin bed that exchanges calcium and magnesium for a very small amount of sodium, so the water reaching your plumbing has nothing left to deposit.

We install softeners across Edmonton, St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove, Leduc, Beaumont and Fort Saskatchewan — always after testing your water, never from a price sheet.

Benefits of Water Softener Installation

How a water softener actually works

Inside the tank is a bed of resin beads carrying sodium ions. As hard water flows through, calcium and magnesium — which hold a stronger charge — trade places with sodium and stay behind on the resin. The water leaving the tank is soft.

When the resin fills with hardness minerals, the softener regenerates: a brine solution drawn from the salt tank flushes the calcium and magnesium to the drain and recharges the resin. Modern metered systems regenerate based on water actually used, not on a clock, which is why they use far less salt and water than units from a decade ago.

Sizing matters more than brand name

A softener that’s undersized regenerates constantly, wastes salt and water, and wears out early. Oversized units sit idle between cycles, letting the resin bed channel and foul. Neither problem shows up on a spec sheet.

Correct sizing multiplies your measured hardness by daily household water use to find the grain capacity you need between regenerations. That’s a five-minute calculation — but only once someone has actually tested your water and asked how many people live in the home.

What installation day looks like

Most softener installs take two to four hours. We shut off the main, cut in a bypass so the system can be serviced without shutting down the house, plumb the unit, connect the drain line with the required air gap, and load the first bags of salt.

Before we leave we test the treated water in front of you, set the regeneration schedule, and show you how to add salt and use the bypass. Floors get protected and the mechanical room is left tidier than we found it.

Water Softener Installation FAQs

Installed cost depends on the grain capacity your household needs and how your mechanical room is plumbed. Every Wise Choice quote is written, itemized and free — and right now includes a reverse osmosis system at no charge with a whole-home softener installation.
Edmonton water typically runs 165–200 mg/L of hardness, well above the 120 mg/L threshold where scale damage begins. If you see white crust on faucets, spots on glassware or a hot water tank that rumbles, a softener will pay for itself in appliance life alone.
No. Salt regenerates the resin bed and is flushed to the drain — it does not go into your drinking water. The sodium added is a small fraction of what’s in a slice of bread, and potassium chloride is available if you prefer.
A quality, correctly sized softener on Edmonton city water lasts 12 to 20 years with basic maintenance. Resin fouling from untreated iron is the usual reason a system dies early, which is why we test before we install.
